His parents, Khuong Dan Tien and Huyen Tien, both immigrants from Vietnam, played a crucial role in nurturing his talent from a young age.
Khuong, a real estate lawyer, and Huyen, a former math teacher, introduced Learner to tennis when he was just 1.5 years old. They named him “Learner” as a tribute to Huyen’s profession, while his younger sister, Justice, was named in honor of Khuong’s career. The family’s dedication to the sport and their supportive environment helped Learner develop his skills and passion for tennis.
Growing up, Learner practiced on community courts in Irvine under his father’s guidance until he was around 10 or 11 years old. His first championship came at the age of five, and he continued to excel in junior tournaments, eventually joining the United States Tennis Association (USTA) youth development program. His hard work and determination paid off when he won his first Challenger title in 2024, becoming the youngest American Challenger champion since Frances Tiafoe in 2016.
